When Choosing a Paint Color
Choosing a paint color is a process I LOVE. My husband thinks I go overboard, but better to go through the hard work in the beginning than have to re-paint it later. Here are some things I like to consider in the process:
Consider the Natural Lighting
Knowing directional lighting is important. You may like a paint color in someone’s home, but it could look completely different in yours.
- North lighting leans more blue and cool-toned. I’ve found this lighting is the most important to test a color in. Unless you are wanting a cool-toned room, finding a color to appear warm in North lighting can take some time.
- South lighting is the most dependable because it does not change much throughout the day. How your color looks in the morning, will look pretty similar in the evening. South lighting leans more warm, so prepare for your color to appear more yellow in this lighting.
- Obviously, East & West lighting have direct sunlight. They will have both warm & cool tones, depending on the time of day.
Consider the Room’s Function
What will the space be used for? Will kids be in there? Is it a work space? Consider the function of the room to determine if the color is right.
Consider How You Want the Space to Feel
What do you want the space to feel like? Uplifting & energizing? Calm & peaceful? Certain colors can help emphasize certain feelings, so take time to consider which colors feel best to you.
Consider the Scheme as a Whole
Just because 2 colors contrast one another does not mean they compliment each other. Consider every finish you have to ensure each piece & color flows together.
Consider Resale
This may be your forever home. If so, this doesn’t really apply. But if you plan to be in your home for just a few years, consider if your paint color is transitional. An accent wall is pretty easy to change, but consider common spaces, trim, doors, cabinets, etc.
